1. The Scottish Deerhound is a breed of sighthound that hails from Scotland. Very obvious, I know.

2. The Scottish Deerhound is one of the taller breeds, usually standing between 28 – 32 inches at the shoulder depending on the sex.

3. These dogs can weigh anywhere between 75 – 110 pounds. That’s a whole lot of dog!

4. The Scottish Deerhound is an older breed. In fact the beginning of this breed’s history is lost due to lack of record keeping during the breed’s start.

5. The Scottish deerhound has coarse fur to aid in running through thick brush during a hunt.

6. The Scottish Deerhound was bred to hunt hoofed game, like the red tailed deer. But I’m sure I didn’t have to tell you that one!

7. You must have a large fenced yard for these dogs. The fence must be secure. Once you get a Deerhound running not much will stop him/her.

8. Frequently it is recommended you get two of these dogs so they can have a playmate to run with, as well as chase, and be chased by.

9. Unlike most sight hounds, the Scottish Deerhound is heavy boned. Although this does effect the dog’s speed it is necessary for keeping up in the harsher terrain of

10. These active pups grow into adults who are very fond of long naps, but don’t let this fool you! They will still require and enjoy plenty of exercise.

11. When not exercised regularly these dogs can become very destructive, be forewarned.

12. Deerhounds are one of the breeds that have remained relatively unchanged over the years.

13. Scottish Deerhounds are known for their gentle and friendly disposition.

14. This makes them terrible guard dogs, as they do not bark much and are very respectful around strangers.

15. The Scottish deerhound is on the endangered dog list. Although there numbers have climbed since their brush with near extinction the breed’s numbers are still limited.
